BPOA History
Established over a decade ago, the Black
Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County (BPOA) is a non-profit
coalition of law enforcement and public service professionals dedicated to
community outreach, professional development, and positive police/community
relations, that include forums, workshops, seminars, and training.
GOALS
- Establish a positive link with the
community
- Focus the collective identity of the
black police officer as an effective role model
- Provide an integral forum for the
concerns of law enforcement and the community
- Improve employment and advancement
opportunities for qualified minority candidates within the law enforcement
community
RELATED ACTIVITIES
- An exhibit at the Sheriff’s Museum
depicting the contributions of African American deputies
- A Halloween party for the pediatric
ward at martin Luther King Jr – Drew Medical Center
- A conference between gang members and
local law enforcement
- A Christmas party for at-risk youth,
a clothing drive for brush fire victims, and the donation of a computer
and software to a local elementary school
- The Governor’s conference on crime
- Membership meetings focused on the
mutual concerns of law enforcement and the community
- Seminars for law enforcement
personnel preparing for promotional exams
- Charitable golf tournaments with
proceeds donated to the United Negro College Fund, Junior Golf Association
of the Western States, Sickle Cell Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Club
of America
The BPOA is also a member of the
National Black Police Association (NBPA), a 28 year-old organization
based in Washington D.C., that represents more than 35,00 law enforcement
officers across the nation, and a partner with the National Organization of
Black law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
Membership is not limited to peace
officers; individuals who have peripheral interests of benefit to the
